When we think about Zero Trust security, we often focus on traditional network connections. But what happens when we need to secure satellite links, remote IoT devices, or cellular connections? In this episode of Top Shelf Tech, Jeremy Nees sits down with Zscaler's Head of Innovation Nathan Howe to explore how Zero Trust is evolving beyond conventional networks.

Securing the Final Frontier

Securing satellite technology has revolutionised high-speed communications, with services like Starlink transforming connectivity in remote locations. Howe explains how Zscaler approaches satellite connections as another data plane requiring a secure overlay. By treating satellite links like any other network connection, organisations can maintain consistent security policies regardless of how users connect.

The Zero Trust SIM

Zero Trust SIM: Rethinking Mobile Security Traditional SIM-based security relies heavily on private APNs and network isolation. Zscaler's innovative approach with Zero Trust SIM shifts this paradigm, creating a direct relationship between the SIM and Zscaler's cellular edge rather than any internal network. This fundamental change enables granular policy control and bi-directional security for IoT and OT devices.

Bridging the Remote Gap

Howe discusses how private 5G networks combined with satellite backhaul are enabling secure connectivity in previously unreachable locations. This hybrid approach allows organisations to deploy Zero Trust security even in the Australian outback or other remote industrial sites.
